What are the things to consider when selecting the right pet for your home?  Having a pet is not only a time commitment for you, but a commitment for the lifetime of the pet.  It is important to make an educated decision between a kitten, cat, puppy or dog  when selecting a pet that is right for your lifestyle.

Some considerations that may influence your choice between a cat or dog include

  • Apartment or home with a yard
  • Little outdoor activity or high activity
  • Small children or elderly people in the home
  • Personality traits

Cats require little training and are often content to be inside and alone. If you like serenity mixed with independence and playfulness, selecting a cat as your pet may be the right choice for you. If you have a high energy environment with lots of activity a dog may be a better choice.

Dogs require more training than cats which they generally enjoy as it gives them something to do. They also have an innate need to please their people. They thrive on interaction with humans and other dogs.

Another point to consider when selecting the right pet is baby versus adult. There is nothing cuter than a kitten or puppy and many times it is hard to resist taking a very young pet home. Please consider the additional care and time needed to support these youngsters while they “grow up”.
What shall we name them?

If you select a dog, then your next decision in selecting the right pet is breed and size. There are many great resources available that can help you understand the breed differences, sizes and characteristics. This research is also important even if you plan on adopting a mixed breed.

When you are in the process of selecting the pet that you believe is right for you, please consider a mixed breed pet. In general they have less health issues than purebreds and there are thousands of homeless pets, both young and old available in shelters.

During the process of selecting the right pet, remember to visit your local animal rescue or shelter to interact with the dogs and cats so you get an idea of what their personality and characteristics are before you make a final decision.

When you are selecting your pet, taking the time to carefully consider which pet fits your lifestyle will assure you of a great start with your new furry friend.

Remember, selecting the right pet for you is a lot like selecting your mate; don’t pick the first one that comes along because you will be living with your new best friend for a very long happy, fun filled time.
