There are a lot of opinions on whether or not you should use pet clothes to express how you feel about your furry friends.  A lot of fashion minded owners really enjoy dressing their pet in trendy clothing, sometimes even matching their own outfits. This is certainly a personal choice and many owners enjoy this activity.  There are just a few things to consider as you make this fashion leap.

For the city dwellers, pet clothes actually provide a benefit for dogs that have to go for walks to do their business.  This is especially true for smaller dogs or short coated dogs which are affected more by cold weather.   For these dogs, warm sweaters, coats and rain gear make a lot of sense.

Pet clothes come in all sorts of variations and are available that fit two or four limbs, and in various sizes.  You can get sweaters, shirts, dresses, vests, coats, wraps, and robes.  You can also get patterns so you can make your own pet clothes that match your outfits.

Pet clothes should fit “comfortably” and not limit your pet’s movement.  If your friend cannot move normally, chances are the clothing is too tight for them.  If your pet is introduced to clothing articles early in their life, they will not only tolerate them, but actually want to please you by wearing them.

Not only are pet clothes fashionable for your pet, but accessories are very popular as well.  These include pet hats, collars, bandanas, leashes, shoes (for bad weather).  There are a lot of these items available at reasonable prices that will give your pet a little “flair” without dressing them in a complete

outfit.  You can also get your pet some “bling” which will make a statement!

Pet costumes are also great fun on holidays and give you lots of photo opportunities for your family album, holiday cards, and birthday celebrations.   Just a cautionary note, if your children are dressing up the family pet, be sure to monitor their activity and approve the outfit to assure that the animal is not subjected to something that may be too tight or loose and pose a safety threat.

If you do want to completely dress up your pet for an event, be kind to them and get the pictures taken and replace the complete outfit with accessories to finish the day.  Pets are not used to wearing complete outfits and will appreciate it when you let them relax.  Just like us, they like to change into something more comfortable as soon as they “get home” from an event.  If you just use some common sense, you can enjoy dressing your pet up and showing them off while keeping them safe and happy.
